As one of South Africa's most celebrated game parks, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park is renowned for its variety of animal and bird life, its wide-ranging photography opportunities and an extremely rich diversity of tree and plant species.
The Park covers an area of 96 000 hectares and contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora and it became world renowned for its white rhino conservation. Hluhluwe is characterised by hilly topography and the northen section of the park is noted for its wide variety of both bird and animal life. Imfolozi, the southern component of the park, is generally hot in summer and mild to cool in winter, although cold spells do occur.
Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is located 280 kilometres north of Durbanthe. The park is the oldest game park in Africa and the only under formal conservation in KwaZulu Natal where the Big five game occur.
The Umfolozi and Hluhluwe reserves were established primarily to protect the white rhinoceros, then on the endangered species list.

Wildlife that you may spot in the park includes Nile crocodile, hippo, white and black rhino, leopard, lion, cheetah, hyena, elephant, buffalo, blue wildebeest, jackal, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, nyala, eland, kudu, impala, duiker, suni, reedbuck, warthog, bushpig, mongoose, baboons, monkeys, a variety of tortoises, terrapins, snakes and lizards.

Visitors to the park can enjoy self guided walks, auto-trails, game drives, boat cruises and well as picnics. However, visitors should be aware that boat cruises are dependent on the water levels of the river.
Relaxing
Relax by making use of the reserve's picnic and barbeque facilities which are situated throughout the park. Alternatively you can visit the onsite restaurant or shop.
Getting Around
You can get around either by joining a tour or by self driving. Your other option is to explore on foot.
