Located on Japan’s main island of Honshu is Hiroshima, capital of Hiroshima Prefecture and the largest city of the Chugoku Region. The city is universally known for the horrific event of the 6th August 1945 when the world's first atomic bomb was dropped on the city by US armed forces. As a result, 200,000 civilians lost their lives.
Travellers can see reminders of that fateful day at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial also known as the A-Bomb Dome, Hiroshima's best-known symbol. This building as formerly the Prefectural Industrial Promotional Hall, all that remains is its skeleton just as it was directly after the bomb hit. The building was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.
Hiroshima has now become a modern, cosmopolitan city with great food and a vibrant nightlife. The city has many museums, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art its own symphony orchestra, parks, botanical gardens, international festivals and Hiroshima castle.
