With magnificent mountains as a backdrop, this picturesque seaside resort is known to be one of the premier land based whale-watching destinations in the world. 

Hermanus, originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, is located along the shores of Walker Bay near the Southern most tip of Africa, forming a part of the Western Cape.  The city lies about 115 kilometres southeast of Cape Town and 40kilometres from Gansbaai, a famous spot where one can dive amongst the Great White Sharks. 

Grotto Beach is the largest beach in Hermanus and has also been proclaimed a "Blue Flag" beach which ensures its preservation as a world heritage site.

Attractions in Hermanus

Major landmarks in Hermanus are the Market Square, the Old Harbour Museum, the Village Square Waterfront Piazza, the Swallow Park and Hermanus Historic Railway Station building.

The city is very famous for its Annual Whale Festival held at the end of september as it is of course the whales that most people come to Hermanus to see.

Hermanus is known to be a nature lovers paradise and offers excellent bird watching opportunities, hiking trails and outdoor adventure activities including great white shark diving from nearby Gansbaai, boat based whale watching, paragliding, sailing, scuba diving, golf, fishing, quad biking, black water tubing, sundboarding and horse riding.

Travellers can enjoy quiet and relaxed days on Hermanus magnificent beaches or perhaps while away a few hours in local cafes and restaurants.
