The Gunung Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing incredible caves in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. The park is named after Mount Mulu, the second highest mountain in Sarawak. For those interested in wildlife and outdoor adventure, the park’s caves, rock formations, mountainous peaks, trekking trails and unique flora and fauna are not to be missed!
Mulu’s concentration of caves, spectacular scenery and biological significance, ensured its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November 2000. This in turn has created renewed interest in the park and a genuine desire to ensure it is adequately protected. The development of world leading conservation practices and high quality nature-based tourism activities at Mulu is the main goal of the Sarawak government.
Attractions in Gunung Mulu National Park
Sarawak Chamber is the world's biggest natural enclosed space - found in Gua Nasib Bagus, it is 2,300 feet (700 m) long, 1,300 feet (396 m) wide and at least 230 feet (70 m) high.
The world famous Pinnacles consists of a series of 45 m high, razor-sharp limestone spikes that tower above the surrounding vegetation.
Deer Cave got its name due to the numerous deer which frequented the cave, now it is home to thousands of bats. Clearwater Cave is the largest cave in South East Asia, measuring 107 km long. As the name suggests, Wind Cave offers a cool breeze which comes from inside the cave and you can feel this cooling effect as you enter the mouth of the cave.
The Headhunter Trail takes its name from its historical role as the route taken by warring parties between the Tutoh and Medalam rivers and leads via Iban villages for a real tribal experience!
Activities in Gunung Mulu National Park
At least a couple of days can be spent at the park to enjoy adventure caving, preferably a week; wildlife, bird and bat spotting; jungle trekking or a climb to the summit of Mount Mulu.
Relaxing
Chill out in the company of local Iban tribespeople, sampling the local firewater… with caution…
Getting Around
To get to Gunung Mulu National Park, you can take a Malaysian Airlines scheduled flight from Miri and Limbang to Mulu; the flight takes approximately 45 minutes. The park can also be reached by boat, via Marudi. However, there is no regular boat service on the last section of the trip so longboats must be chartered. Overall the best way to explore the park is to have a local Travel Expert make arrangements for you – less hassle, less wasted time and usually excellent value for money.
