The remote east is an area where you’ll almost certainly never see another tourist, indeed years can pass without some of these areas ever catching glimpse of human kind. It is a long way from everywhere and heavy pack ice combined with very high winds make access difficult. The wastes inland are known as being the coldest place on Earth, and the region is home to numerous emperor penguins.

Here in the East, one of the great but lesser-known explorers had his base - the Australian Douglas Mawson . Perched on the edge of Commonwealth Bay, it is definitely worth a visit – if you can get to it for the katabatic winds! See the separate entry for Commonwealth Bay and the Magnetic South Pole for more information.

The most striking landmarks of this area, however are the enormous Mertz Glacier and Ninnis Glacier, both of which cut an imposing sight as the extend a long way from the land across the Antarctic Seas.

Remote to the extreme, in 1991 a Russian surgeon based in this region had no option but to remove his own appendix...

So, who says they don’t make Antarctic Explorers like they used to?!
