George is situated in the Western Cape Province in South Africa and is the main gateway to the beautiful Garden Route. It is bordered by the Outeniqua mountains to the north and the Indian ocean to the south and is home to many attractions such as historical churches, museums and botanical gardens. However, it also allows outdoor enthusiasts to get off the beaten track and go hiking, horse riding and surfing amongst other activities.
George is the sixth oldest town in South Africa and has a population of approximately 104,700. It is also the administrative and commercial hub of the Garden Route as well as a popular holiday and conference centre.
Attractions in George
There are many churches to see in George such as the Anglican Church, the Dutch Reformed Church and the oldest catholic church in South Africa; the St Peter and St Paul Catholic Church. Other attractions include the 1912 old town hall, the crocodile farm and George Museum.
Activities in George
George is a superb location from which to explore the great outdoors and to take part in some exciting outdoor activities. Quad bike along nature and historic trails, hike through forests into the Outeniqua Mountains or simply swim, surf and sunbathe at the beautiful beaches in the area. Or for a sense of nostalgia climb aboard the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe; the oldest steam train in Africa.
Relaxing
Relax in the George Botanical Garden or perhaps play a round of golf or try your hand at fishing at numerous spots along the coast. There are also many shopping squares and malls where you can browse the shops before relaxing in one of the bars and restaurants.
Getting Around
The best way to get around George is by car. You can hire cars from most major towns and cities as well as from the airports.
