Gáldar is located west of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, north of Puerto Rico, and west of Arucas, covering an area of 61.59 square kilometres. The city was a political nucleus at the time of conquest in 1478, the seat of Gran Canaria's ancient rulers mainly the Guanche. Gáldar was also the capital of the island before Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Spanish city, one of the first on the island, was built over the aboriginal settlement. Today, Gáldar lies in the centre of the banana-growing region, important to the island's agricultural economy. The name of the city comes from ‘Agaldar’ that can be translated as the "Royal City."
