Located in the province of Trapani, the historic medieval town of Erice is perched on top of Mount Erice at around 750m above sea level and enjoys glorious views over the sea as well as of eastern Sicily, Trapani, Marsala, and the Egadi Islands. Enclosed by defensive walls the town is a maze of cobbled streets and passageways, little piazzas, flowering courtyards and more than 60 small churches.
Erice owes its name to Eryx, mythical ruler of the Elimi. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans, in turn, conquered the city, before it became an important stronghold for the Saracens. The Normans christened the town Monte San Giuliano, which remained until 1934, when it was given the name Erice.
The town is now the main tourist resort of the area and every summer it hosts the famous Week of Medieval and Renaissance Music, which attracts internationally famous artists.
