Egirdir is a charming lakeside town dating from Hittite times and famous for being the capital of Turkey’s Lake District. It provides a great location from which to set out on walks and treks into the surrounding hills, or to just relax and enjoy the peaceful lakeside setting.
Whilst over 3,200 years old it’s not the history that most people visit this region for, but its beautiful landscapes. Located on the shores of Lake Egirdir the town is fringed by mountains and its centre is the peninsula of Yesilada – Green Island. The town’s man-made attractions are fairly limited and can be enjoyed in the space of a morning, but that would be to do the region an injustice. Get out and about and start walking!
Attractions in Egirdir
In town there is the Hizir Bey Mosque and Dundar Bey Caravanserai and a ruined castle, Great walks will take you to isolated and little-visited villages and this is the big attraction here.
Activities in Egirdir
Walks can be arranged with local travel experts who know the routes well, and these can range from a day or so to around a week.
Relaxing
Enjoy a boat trip on the lake and following it with a freshly caught fish meal.
Getting Around
If not walking the ton and surrounding area can be explored on foot and by taxi. Those intending to walk will need to either book a tour (highly recommended – a guide makes all the difference) or negotiate with an accommodation provider to provide drop-off and pick-up services (more difficult).
