Dongola was once an important centre of power in ancient Nubia, the remains of the city are now being excavated and the ruins of the Cushite Temple of Kawa - dating from the 7th century BC on the east bank of the river can be visited by ferry.

Dongola now is the capital of Sudan's Northern State and the heart of the Nubian region.  The land surrounding the city is irrigated with plentiful crops such as cereals, fruit and dates growing.

Dongola has a colourful fruit and vegetable souk that is well worth a visit, and makes a nice relaxing break from desert travel.

Relaxing

Sit in a cafe by the river and watch the people, ferries and animals passing by.
