Divriği is almost unknown amongst travellers to Turkey, such is the obscurity of this little town 175km from its better-known neighbour Sivas, yet it is home to the best example of 13th century Seljuk architecture in the country. The Ulu Cami and Darüşşifa complex significance as an internationally important piece of architecture has been recognised since its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

The narrow streets of Divriği see relatively few tourists, but those that come do so to see the Ulu Cami and Darüşşifa complex and are not disappointed. Conquered by the Seljuk Turks at the beginning of the 11th century the complex was founded by Ahmet Şah in 1228. The doorways, and in particular the northern entrance to the Ulu Cami are beautiful - masterpieces of stonework design and execution. The detail is amazing, with fine, filigree work reminiscent in detail if not in style of the superb work to be found in Rajasthan, India. Inside the mosque has just one prayer room and is simple in decoration, contrasting markedly with the elaborate 3 doorways. Lovers of oriental architecture should not miss Divriği and in all likelihood will be able to explore alone.

Attractions in Divrigi

The Ulu Cami and Darüşşifa complex is the main draw but there are also several Seljuk kümbets or tombs throughout the town along with a ruined kale or castle.

Activities in Divrigi

Seeing the sights of Divriği will not take more than a half-day. Include as part of a wider itinerary.

Relaxing

Enjoy a glass of chai in a traditional tea-house after your explorations – you’ll be made very welcome as travellers are rare.

Getting Around

Given the somewhat isolated location of Divriği you will need an early start if travelling the 3 hours by bus from Sivas. An alternative we recommend its inclusion in a wider itinerary using a driver guide.
