Easily rivalling Nagarkot for those wonderful views Dhulikhel in addition has much cultural interest being a typical Newari town surrounded by nearby Tamang villages. With a horizon stretching a massive 400km there are superb mountain views early in the October to March mornings. Once the views have been appreciated then the town and surrounding areas offer much to the visitor, with temples dotting the old town and several interesting hikes in the area to enjoy.
Around an hour and a half or so out of Kathmandu lies Dhulikhel which looks northeast towards the mighty Himalaya. Until recently this was a sleepy little town, its valley a cluster of primarily culturally-rich Newari settlements. Today the valley is home to around 70,000 people who make their living mostly out of the fertile agricultural land.
Traditionally the local people produced things which they traded with travellers passing through the valley on their way to and from Tibet, lying as it does on the main trade route. Its Newari community gained much wealth and graced the town with some fine residential buildings and several temples, indeed the older part of town is dotted with temples with the most notable being the triple-roofed Hari Siddhi Temple.
Visitors come to Dhulikhel to appreciate not only the architecture but also the fine mountain views which stretch some 400km from the Annapurnas in the west to Numbur in the east: the Himalayan skyline dominates with Annapurna, Manaslu, Lumjung, Ganesh Himal, Mahalangur, and Khumbhakarna all visible.
Another attraction of Dhulikhel are the fine walks from the town ranging from short rambles to longer treks; favourites include Dhulikhel / Panauti, Dhulikhel / Banepa, Dhulikhel / Namobuddha.
Activities in Dhulikhel
Spend a night or two exploring Dhulikhel and the surrounding countryside being treated to fine Himalayan views as you ramble. Alternatively spend an afternoon and evening in town then rise early for the views before setting off on one of the longer multi-day treks the region offers. The area is also a mountain-biker’s paradise and it is easily possible to cycle to and from Kathmandu.
Relaxing
Chill out after exploring town with a cold drink on the terrace of one of the top-end hotels for superb views.
Getting Around
Dhulikhel is on the main Arniko Highway and is well-served by public transport. Once in town getting around on foot is easiest and most rewarding.
