Darjeeling is a famous hill station and headquarters of the Darjeeling district in north east India. The town sits on the lower range of the Himalayas, at around 2,134m. Darjeeling became famous as a hill station during the British Raj in India when British residents travelled to the hills to escape the heat of the Indian plains during the summer months.
Darjeeling is also famous worldwide for its tea industry which dates back to the mid 19th century. Tea plantations were developed by the British and the tea growers of the area developed distinctive hybrids of black tea and fermenting techniques, which created some of the worlds finest blends. Many of the plantations can be visited.
The area surrounding Darjeeling has opportunities for a variety of activities including trekking and river rafting and there are fine views of Kanchenjinga on a clear day..
