Sat on Erhai Lake, Dali is the traditional home of the warm and friendly Bai people. Surrounded by mountains of the Cangshan range the ancestors of the Bai people settled in the Dali area some 4000 years ago. In the 2nd century the area came under the influence of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD). In addition two ethnic states, the Nanzhao State (738-937) in Tang Dynasty times (618-907), and the Dali State (937-1253) in Song (960-1279) times, were once established here as well and Dali has always prospered sitting as it does on the trade route north to Tibet and to eastern India.

Attractions in Dali

The city walls encompass what is called Dali Tai He, or Ancient City, with nearby Xizhou and Zhoucheng also reflecting the ancient architectural style for which the town is known.

Dali whilst not as pretty as Lijiang is a great spot from where to explore by bike, learn about Bai culture and explore the lakeshore and mountainous hinterlands.
Attractions include the Butterfly Spring, the impressive 3 Pagodas, walks and hikes in the Cangshan and visits to the villages on the eastern shore of the lake where cormorant fishing is still to be found.
