Daisetsuzan National Park is located in the centre of Hokkaido island. The park covers 2267.64 square km and is the largest national park in Japan. Within the park there are 16 mountain peaks over 2000 meters with walking trails that offer some of the most rugged scenery in Japan.

The park contains three volcanic mountain groups; the first is the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group which contains Hokkaido's tallest mountain, Mount Asahi. The second group is the Tokachi Volcanic Group which includes Mount Tokachi. The Shikaribetsu Volcanic Group includes Mount Ishikari.

The park is famous for its wildlife, including brown bears, and its alpine meadows are popular for trekking in the summer. Skiing is an option in the winter. Also within the park are the hot springs resorts of Asahidake Onsen, Fukiage Onsen, Sounkyo Onsen and Tenninkyo Onsen.
