Located in deep in the Andes, amongst fertile valleys and dramatic landscapes, Cusco was once the centre of the Inca Empire. Later fought for and overthrown by the Spanish Conquistadores, the city is now the archaeological and tourism capital of Latin America. Crammed full with fascinating ruins and relics from Inca and Colonial times, the UNESCO World Heritage City of Cusco is also the entry point for the Sacred Valley and the famous Inca Trail to the legendary lost city of Machu Picchu.

In local language, Quechua, Cusco (or Qoosq’o) means ‘Centre of the World’. According to Legend, it was founded by Manco Capac and Mama Occllo who rose out of Lake Titicaca, and was later ruled by some thirteen Inca Lords.

The legacy of the Inca folklore, culture and architectural is simply fascinating, and following the arrival of the Spaniards, Cusco developed in new remarkable ways. The incredible colonial constructions built upon Inca foundations, have created a unique mestizo style of architecture, and this influence can be seen throughout the city’s culture and art.

But it is not just the past that makes this such a magical place, it is also the present. Welcoming, friendly, lively and fun, Cusco is crammed full of character. With more shops, crafts and markets than you could hope for, enough great restaurants, bars and clubs to lose yourself in for weeks, Cusco is a spellbinding place that people find hard to leave.

Attractions in Cusco

A simple stroll through the streets of Cusco looking at the fine Inca and Colonial constructions is essential. See fine interlocking stone carved walls in the ancient alleyways (such as Hatun Rumiyoc where the famous 12-sided stone is found), the rambling cobbled lanes around San Blas and the incredible stone foundations of the Korikancha (Temple of the Sun). There are also many museums and colonial buildings, such as the Cathedral, which are well worth a visit, before heading out further afield to the Sacred Valley and beyond.

If you plan to visit many of the major attractions in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, it is well worth buying a ‘Boleto Turístico Unificado’ (BTU), which offers excellent value for entry to most monuments and sites for a period of 5 to 10 days. These cost approximately USD $10.

Activities in Cusco

Cusco is the start point for the majority of activities in the Sacred Valley and around. Trekking, cycling, horse riding and white water rafting are amongst the most popular activities in this region, but there are also opportunities for serious mountaineering, hot air ballooning, parascending. It is relatively easy to arrange either trip for a day or longer starting from Cusco.

Relaxing

Drink a delicious hot chocolate and tuck into a tasty cake on a balcony overlooking the main plaza in the Trotamundos Cafe.

Getting Around

By day, the best way to get around the main sights of Cusco is on foot. Traffic can be heavy on the main avenues and you miss many of the cities gems if do it any other way. Do bear in mind however, especially on arrival, Cusco is at altitude. Take your time, enjoy the city, but don’t overexert yourself.

By night it is strongly recommended that you take authorised taxis if travelling around Cusco. These can be arranged through your hotel, restaurant or local Travel Expert.
