Billed by many as one of the best white-water rivers in the world the Çoruh River certainly packs a punch. It’s an exciting Grade 4/5 and with a number of specialists able to provide trips from Yusefeli its remote location is no longer a barrier.
The Çoruh rises in the Kaçkar Mountains and winds its way 248km to the sea in Georgia. Fed by melting snows the spring rapids create some of the best white-water for rafters and kayakers in the world and have recently given rise to a unique event – the Çoruh Extreme races (2nd to 9th June 2007). Most people find that the white-water of early summer is best tackled by raft, though kayaking is possible. However you enjoy the river you will be rewarded with fantastic views and an awesome adrenaline rush that is hard to beat.
Attractions in Coruh River
The appeal of the Çoruh lies in its dramatic location combined with the high volume rapids of spring which shoot it to a Grade 5 river and into the world’s top ten. More experience rafters will appreciate the technical aspect of some of its rapids which, as usual, are named. Smaller rapids can be found too making this suitable for less experienced groups. The Çoruh Extreme is a competitive kayaking event on the Çoruh River and starts on the 3rd June 2007.
Relaxing
Yusufeli now has several pansiyons and small hotels together with a growing number of cafes and restaurants. Entertainment remains however generally low key and centres around relaxing with locals and fellow travellers at the end of the day.
Getting Around
Most rafting trips start in Yusefeli but local suppliers can make arrangements to and from Yusefeli from outside the region.
