Home of Commonwealth Bay and a great variety of wildlife, such as Emperor Penguins, this is also the region where the Magnetic South Pole currently lies. Located in the remote east of the Antarctic Continent, only a few Antarctic cruises visit this region. Known as the “home of the blizzard”, landing almost anywhere in these exposed lands can be difficult, but is all the more rewarding when it is possible.
Much of the exploration of this region of Antarctica was done by Douglas Mawson, who is perhaps one of the lesser known polar explorers. His contribution, however, was significant and he was highly rated by both Scott and Shackleton. This region of Eastern Antarctica remained Mawson’s priorty as it was the closest part of the white continent to his own country – Australia.
It was from is Commonwealth Bay base in this region that Mawson became the first to reach the Magnetic South pole in 1909, although this point has now migrated off the coast to a point beneath the ocean.
