Easily reached from both Tegucigalpa and San Pedro de Sula, the old capital of Comayagua is rich in cultural and historical heritage. Awash with colonial architecture and home to figures of Honduran history its fame today though perhaps comes mostly from its enthusiastic Easter celebrations.
Founded in 1537 in a strategic location between two other major cities in Guatemala and Nicaragua, and halfway between both oceans, Comayagua soon grew into an important city.
When Honduras was granted its independence, Comayagua became the country's capital, a status it then lost in the late 1800s when President Marco Aurelio Soto moved the capital to Tegucigalpa to punish the people of Comayagua … for publicly criticising his wife!
Today the city, with its traditional central plaza and well laid out streets lined with old colonial houses are a testimony to its past. Its splendid churches and cathedral are well preserved thanks to restoration work.
Easily reached from both Tegucigalpa in the south east and San Pedro Sula in the north east, the city and nearby attractions are just waiting to be explored.
