Famous for being one of the best preserved Spanish Colonial cities in Honduras, the charming Choluteca, near the Pacific coast, is also a base for exploring this less humid part of Honduras. Much less visited, those who pass up Choluteca and the Pacific coastline miss a slightly different take on the Central American nation.
As well as being home to the best preserved colonial architecture in the country, it is also full of colonial and post-colonial history.
The black volcanic beaches found here are in interesting contrast to those on the Caribbean side of the country.
Villa de Jerez de Choluteca as it was originally known, was founded in 1541, and is now the fifth largest city in Honduras. The name ‘choluteca’ is thought to mean ‘broad valley’ and derive from the indigenous language of the Chorotega Indians, who dominated the region prior to the arrival of the Spanish in 1522.
The annual Feria Patronal, held from 6th to 14th December, is a good fiesta with the usual food, music and dancing, and fireworks on the last night.
Attractions in Choluteca
The area in and around Choluteca has Colonial architecture to enjoy, in Choluteca itself and in Amapala, plus the attractions one would expect of a coastal region: Cedeno beach, the bay island of Isla del Tigre and Bahia de Chismuyo Wildlife Refuge.
Activities in Choluteca
Stroll around Choluteca's preserved city centre.
Hike the Isla del Tigre's mountain for views of the bay shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Getting Around
Choluteca is an excellent place to continue travel west or east into El Salvador or Nicaragua.
