Capital of Sichuan and known for its spicy food Chengdu today attracts people en-route to Emei Shan, Chongqing and the start of their Yangtse cruise or for meetings with the country’s pandas at the nearby Research Centre.
Incredibly fertile the Chengdu area is also well-watered and has been a place of settlement for 2,400 years, when the first emperor built his capital here, a name kept ever since. Chengdu is the place where the bronze casting, an important part of ancient Chinese culture, originated, and the place where the Southern Silk Road started. It is also the place where the earliest paper currency was first printed.
