The Dordogne region is said to have more than 1000 of the finest castles in France. These ‘chateaux’ are often set in spectacular locations, surrounded by immaculate gardens with superb views over the countryside. They provide reason alone to visit the region, but when combined with the beautiful countryside and medieval villages the draw is irresistible!
Many of the larger and more imposing castles date from the 12th-14th centuries, a time of the wars between England and France. At the end of the Hundred Years War, came a period of development during the late 15th and early 16th centuries when, in the countryside, the nobility had the majority of the chateaux, manors and country-houses erected. There are many chateaux which are not open to the public. This is due to the fact that the name 'chateau' can be applied to any house that has been a centre of wine production - so many places that are called 'chateaux' will be on a slightly smaller scale.
