Located in the province of Palermo, on the northern coast of Sicily, Cefalu is a picturesque fishing village in a fabulous position between the sea and a rocky peninsula. Its maze of narrow, winding, medieval streets make the town a pleasant place to wander and discover its ancient sites, such as its majestic cathedral. Its superb beach and waterfront harbour are ideal for relaxing and enjoying the many restaurants. The town is now one of the major tourist attractions in the region and is very busy with tourists during the summer months.
Cefalu was a medieval town built on the site of an ancient Sicanian and Greek settlement before becoming a Roman city in 254 BC. After the Byzantine age, it was occupied by the Muslims after a lengthy siege. Then in 1063, when the Normans took the town, Cefalu benefitted from a period of great prosperity, which culminated in the foundation of the bishopric and the building of the Duomo in 1131. Cefalù has always been a centre of great interest and attracts a great many visitors today.
Attractions in Cefalu
Dominating the centre of the town sits the majestic Duomo of Cefalu which was built in 1131, in a Sicilian Romanesque style.
Within the town itself are several medieval buildings including the Lavatoio, a medieval wash-house fed by freshwater springs.
The Osterio Magno, the legendary residence of King Roger II, has now been restored and reopened as an exhibition centre.
Located behind the town, is Cefalu’s rocky peninsula ‘La Rocca’. As well as finding ancient remains, a walk up to the top is well worth it as the views of the town, beach, and coastline below are magnificent.
Activities in Cefalu
Spend a day exploring the town and, for the more adventurous, hike up to the summit of La Rocca for a magnificent view of the town, cathedral, mountains and the sea. It is well worth the climb.
Relaxing
There are some good restaurants in the town where you can sample local seafood specialties, after a pleasant meal you can relax on Cefalu’s beautiful beach.
Getting Around
Walking is the easiest and most rewarding way to get around the town.
