The heart of Cathar Country is in the Aude department of the Languedoc Roussillon region. The Cathars covered a period in French history which lasted from about 1165 to 1271 leaving behind the ruins of their Cathar castles in a region of spectacular scenery.

The Cathar religion was supported by many in the region, both peasants and nobles, due to the over-excesses of the Roman Catholic church. Attempts were made to unite the Cathars and the Catholics, but this was not successful and after Pope Innocent III was elected in 1198, a battle to defeat the Cathars began which eventually led to their downfall.

Attractions in Cathar Country

Often founded perched high on a hill top the Cathar castles of the region include Peyrepertuse, Puivert, Rennes le Chateau, Chateau de Puilaurens, and Chateau de Montsegur.
