Malbork Castle was built by the Teutonic Order and named Marienburg after the Virgin Mary. The town which grew around it was also named Marienburg but is now known as Malbork.

It is the largest gothic fortress in Europe and in 1997 the impressive castle was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to a number of exhibitions, both permanent and temporary as well as stunning architecture it is a site well worth visiting.

The castle was founded in 1274 by the Teutonic Knights and it was named Marienburg after the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the Order. The castle was expanded several times in order to host increasing number of Knights, and eventually it became the largest Gothic fortress in Europe.

The castle and town passed to Polish control in 1466 and when World War II broke out over half of the castle was destroyed as a result of fighting. It has since been restored, however, the main cathedral in the castle, remains in its ruined state.

There are numerous permanent and temporary exhibitions in the museum at the castle for visitors to view including an archeological presentation, "Arms and Colours during Teutonic Times", The Cemetery of the Malbork Convent and the Main Tower of the Malbork Castle. There are also weapons, handicrafts and furniture on display and you can see the spectacular architecture of the preserved northern and western wings and three corner towers.

It is possible to take a foreign language guided tour of the castle to learn more about its architecture and history or perhaps explore the local town of Malbork.

There are cafes within the castle if you want to take the time to rest and relax of head into Malbork town where there is a wider variety of options for something to eat. You could also take a break from touring the castle by browsing the souvenir shop that is located on the site.

Getting Around

There is a train station in Malbork as well as numerous taxi firms but the area is compact and most easily navigated on foot.
