Situated on a small promontory on Lake Trasimeno, the fortified town of Castiglione del Lago remains surrounded by its ancient walls.

There were one 4 islands on the lake and Castiglione del Lago sits on what was one of them. The historical center of Castiglione del Lago is well-preserved dating from medieval times: it has three gates, three piazza and three churches!

Sat on the once important route to Orvieto, Chiusi and Arezzo its location meant that it was a city always under contention with Etruscans fighting Romans, and later Tuscans against the nearby Perugian forces and the present walls are one of several sets that have been built over the years.

The Castello del Leone – the dramatically-named “Lion Fortress” was completed in 1247 and features square towers in four of its corners and a triangular donjon.

The main attractions of the town include the Renaissance style Palazzo del Comune (Town Hall) now a museum and gallery, the Palazzo Ducale della Corgna and the stucco Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.
