The magnificient region of Cape Winelands comprises of rugged mountains, fertile valleys, orchards and vineyards that are adorned with historic villages and gracious houses, built in typical Cape Dutch style. The wines produced in this region have become world-famous and wine tasting at the numerous award-winning wine estates has become a popular activity for locals and visitors from all over the world. The region lies not far from Cape Town and its fertile green valleys of the are the largest wine producing region in South Africa. It is divided into six main wine regions, with each one offering its own unique wine route. Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Robertson and Wellington are the most popular.

Constantia Valley Wine region is situated in mountainous surroundings, boasting some of the oldest wine estates and homesteads along with several award winning wines and restaurants. Wine tasting and cellar tours are offered by most of the region farms. 

Stellenbosch Wine region, the most famous in the Cape, is home to a variety of cellars producing some of the country's most acclaimed wines. Among them are Boschendal, Neethlingshof, Delheim, Welmoed, Delair, Spier, Saxenburg, La Motte, Boschendal, Chamonix and Cabriere. The first official wine route was established in 1971.

Activities in Cape Winelands

Travellers to the Cape Winelands can enjoy activities such as game viewing in one of the region's game reserves, canoeing, 4x4 trails, hiking, mountain biking, abseiling and horse trails through the vineyards. However, perhaps the most popular activity in the region is wine cellar tours at local wine farms where you can sample a number of different locally produced wines.

Relaxing

Many vineyards have restaurants attached to them which are ideal in which to relax. Here you may experience cheese as well as wine tasting. However, you can also head into local towns to sample different cuisines at a number of cafes and restaurants.

Getting Around

Get around by hire car or by joining an organized wine cellar tour.
