Bydgoszcz is the capital city of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region and is situated on the Brda and Vistula rivers. Home to many buildings of architectural interest from renaissance churches to gothic cathedrals. However, it also presents visitors with many opportunities for outdoor leisure including walking, horse riding and skiing.
Bydgoszcz was ooriginally a fishing settlement called Bydgozcya and it was situated close to the Poland-Germany border. Throughout its history it was conquered by the Germans several times and inn 1945 it was liberated and incorporated again into Poland.
Attractions in Bydgoszcz
The city is home to many buildings of architectural interest. Visit the Gothic-Renaissance style St Mary Church which was built in 1582, the gothic cathedral which was built in 1466 and is the oldest in the city or the beautiful buildings and cafes in the Old Town. There are also many monuments and sculptures to see including war monuments and the “crossing the river” sculpture which flies above the river and is becoming something of a symbol for the city. Lastly you can also check out the Spichrze which currently hosts an art gallery.
Activities in Bydgoszcz
In Bydgoszcz it is possible to boat down the Brda River, however, it is the Forest Park of Culture and Recreation that attracts most visitors. It is home to a zoo and botanical gardens but most importantly it provides the opportunity to walk amidst stunning surroundings, horse ride and even ski.
Relaxing
Bydgoszcz is home to many performance venues which are ideal for relaxing in after a days sightseeing. Head to Ignacy Paderewski’s Concert Hall which is said to be one of the best classical music concert halls in Europe, the Nova Opera or Hieronimkonieczka’s Polish Theatre for a wide choice of performances and cultural events.
Getting Around
Buses and taxis are widely available or you can opt to hire a car. Many parts of the city can be explored on foot.
