The Blue Nile River is what embodies the drama and mystery of the great rivers of history, beginning its journey with a thundering cascade over the exceptional Blue Nile Falls, 30 kilometres downstream from where it leaves Lake Tana in northern Ethiopia.
The Blue Nile is so-called as during times of flood the water current is so high that it changes colour to an almost black - since in the local Sudanese language the word for black is also used for the colour blue.
The upper reaches of the Blue Nile are known locally as the Abbai. The Abbai portion of the river is considered holy by many in Ethiopia, and is believed to be the Gihon river mentioned as flowing out of the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2.
After plunging over the Tis Issat Falls the river loops across northwest Ethiopia through a series of deep valleys and canyons into Sudan, by which point it is only known as the Blue Nile. Later on in its course the Blue Nile joins the White Nile in Khartoum, and, as the Nile, flows through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea at Alexandria.
