The Blue Nile Falls, known locally as Tis Issat which means "water and smoke," is a popular place to visit on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia.

At certain times of year this misty deluge produces an amazing spectacle of rainbows, shimmering across the gorge, and a small perennial rainforest of lush green vegetation, to the delight of the many monkeys and multicoloured birds that inhabit the area.

The falls are situated on the upper course of the Nile river, about 30 kilometres downstream from the town of Bahir Dar and Lake Tana.

The Blue Nile Falls consist of four streams that vary from a trickle in the dry season to over 400 metres wide in the rainy season. Regulation of Lake Tana now reduces the variation somewhat, and since 2003, a hydro-electric station has taken much of the flow out of the falls except during the rainy season.

A short distance further downstream sits the first stone bridge constructed in Ethiopia, built at the command of Emperor Susenyos in 1626. According to Manoel de Almeida, stone for making lime had been found nearby along the tributary Alata, and a craftsman who had come from India with Alfonso Mendez, the Catholic Patriarch of Ethiopia, supervised the construction.

Activities in Blue Nile Falls

Visitors can enjoy walking along the east bank all the way to the back of the falls and could cross the river by papyrus boat known as 'Tankwa.'

Excellent Falls, well worth the walk to get to them. Having visited all the larger ones (Victoria/Niagara) it is nice to get to some without all the tourists.
