Black River Gorges National Park protects 6,574 hectares of native forest in Mauritius. It was first created in 1994 to protect endemic plants and rare bird species and now offers outdoor and nature enthusiasts spectacular natural scenery and some excellent walking trails.

Attractions in Black River Gorges National Park

The park has two visitor centres: the main one being at the park’s western edge; the other – ‘Le Petrin Information Centre’ is located on the eastern entrance to the park. Both centres provide up-to-date information on the park. At Le Petrin a boardwalk provides access to the typical dwarf forest of the region. There are magnificent views, and stunning drives through the park.

Activities in Black River Gorges National Park

There are various trails within the park for all standards of walker including a 7 km walk to Maccabee Forest, or an excellent 15 km hike down through the Gorges to Black River. From the road across Plaine Champagne towards Charmarel there is easy access to viewpoints at Alexandra Falls, over Bel Ombre and over the stunning Black River Gorges. Another (longer) trail leads up to the Piton de la Petite Riviers Noire (Black River Peak) which is the highest point on Mauritius at 828m.

The National Park is easily reached from Vacoas or Curepipe, via La Marie and Mare aux Vacoas. Road access into Black River Gorge from the coast road is also possible.
