South east of Jodhpur lie a series of remarkable, traditional villages where a unique way of life continues unchanged now as it has been for hundreds of years. The Bishnois revere all animals and trees and follow an edict dating from 1485 whose 29 principles are still rigorously followed today. This makes for an extremely traditional way of life that has hardly changed since them and a visit to their villages is a privilege and rare insight into an unchanging society.

When Marwar was hit by a drought in the mid-15th century Guru Jambheshwar laid down 29 principles to be followed by the members of his sect. One of these 29 principles, (“Bish Noi” means 29 in Hindi) means protect animals and trees and as a result all animals and trees since then have been considered sacred.

The Bishnois have a long and complicated sect history with many tales relating to the lengths they will go to protect trees and animals: many Bishnois have given their lives in order to protect trees and animals on their lands. They are fierce when protecting the same and do not cremate their dead, instead burying them. Their special relationships with animals means that those near villages are not afraid of the locals and thus great sightings can often be made.

Activities in Bishnoi Villages

A visit from Jodhpur to the Bishnoi villages is a rare privilege and one that those with time should consider. Jeep safaris can be made from Jodhpur and it is possible to make overnight stays in the villages. Interesting villages include Zhalamand, Salwas, and Kakani where tradition crafts such as pottery and dhurry-weaving can be seen.

Relaxing

Enjoy some retail therapy during your visit and assist the people by shopping for dhurries or other locally produced goods in the villages.

Getting Around

The only realistic way to visit is to include the villages on an organised tour with a specialist operator based in Delhi or locally in Jodhpur.
