Located in Monterrico, the Biotopo Monterrico-Hawaii nature reserve is an important turtle nesting ground, covering a total area of some 28 square kilometres. The reserve is comprised of four distinct types of mangrove, with its waters flowing between branches, interspersed with narrow canals, open lagoons, bulrushes and water lilies. The tangle of roots in the water offers small fish protection from their natural predators.
The nature reserve’s main purpose is to act as an important sea turtle hatchery but the centre also breeds caimans, iguanas and freshwater turtles for release into the wild. It is also an ideal location for bird-watching.
Its turtle release programme is the reserve’s main focus and it is a delight to see the baby turtles make their way towards the ocean.
