Białystok is the largest city in north-eastern Poland and the capital of the Podlaskie region. Home to palaces, churches and monuments it has great cultural merit. However, for those who prefer to explore natural features there are also parks, gardens and national parks including the last primeval forest in Europe.
Białystok received its city charter in 1749 and during the 19th century it became a major centre of the textile industry. The city suffered during the second world war, however, in 1943 the Białystok Ghetto Uprising began and many Polish Jews started an armed struggle against German troops.
Attractions in Białystok
The main attraction in Białystok is the Branicki Palace, home to beautiful gardens, a park and many statues of Atlas. The palace was destroyed during the second world war and later rebuilt to its former glory. Here you’ll also find a monument to Polish soldiers and Equerry’s home, the guest house of the Branicki family.
Other places of interest here include the Neogothic Fara’s Church, the 1745 built Town Hall and museum and Zwierzyniec Park zoo where you can see deer, wolves, bears, foxes, lynx and badgers amongst others.
Activities in Białystok
There are many places here to walk and generally enjoy the great outdoors. Two such places are Zwierzyniec Park and Suprasl with its gorgeous forests, rivers and streams. However, there is also Bialowieza National Park, the oldest national park in Poland as well as the last primeval forest in Europe. It is famed for its bison and although visitor numbers are restricted here you can join guided hiking tours of the park.
Relaxing
Relax in Białystok at the park that is dedicated to L.L Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto. Or visit the numerous clubs, markets and cafes which are renowned for their incredible hot chocolate drinks.
Getting Around
Buses are frequent and go to numerous destinations; however, it is also possible to get around much of the area on foot.
