Belize City is far removed from the ideal of Caribbean beauty, but it is nonetheless a fascinating mix of colonial and post-Colonial, and all the ethnicities that make up Belize.
The city continues to dominate the economic and cultural life of the nation; to have an understanding of Belize, one must have an understanding of Belize City. It is also the gateway to the interior and to the Cayes, with the coral reef and marine reserves such as Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary being within spitting distance.
Belize City also boasts some of the best restaurants in the country and the liveliest nightlife.
Being the country’s largest port, many cruise ships dock at Belize City, and passengers are well catered for at Fort Street Tourism Village. However, for the more adventurous explorer, there are many fascinating gems located within easy walking distance of each other, including Museums – the Maritime Museum, the House of Culture and Museum of Belize; religious centres – St John’s Cathedral, Yarborough Cemetery, Methodist and Hindu Temples; and open spaces – Albert Park, Bird Island, all with a seaside aspect.
Belize City was founded (originally as "Belize Town") in the mid-17th century by British lumber harvesters. It had previously been a small Mayan city called Holzuz.
Belize Town was ideal for the British as a central post because it was on the sea and a natural outlet for local rivers and creeks down which the British shipped logwood and mahogany.
It was the capital of the country until the centre of government was moved to Belmopan in 1970.
Attractions in Belize City
The history of Belize has been centred on its largest city, so a visit to Belize City’s historical, cultural and religious monuments is essential.
For the naturalist, Belize Zoo is a nicely done project in natural education and animal rehabilitation that is well worth visiting; while the Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places in the country to see the enigmatic manatees.
If you are a keen diver, the resorts on Spanish Lookout Caye and St George’s Caye offer excellent packages as well as being great places to get away from it all.
