There are many places along the Pacific coast of Guatemala where you can find some pleasant black sand beaches which have resulted from the volcanic nature of the country. Whilst taking into consideration that the waves can be strong and there is always an undertow, surfing is a growing sport along the Guatemalan coast which can be enjoyed without the crowds.
Of the many beaches to choose from, Montericco can easily be reached in a few hours from Guatemala City. For those travellers with an interest in water sports, Sipicate is the best beach for surfing and Itztapa has opportunities for sport-fishing.
Puerto San Jose and Champerico are great for sampling the local seafood as well as enjoying the beach and if you really like to get away from it all then the beach at the small village of Tilapa is the place to go.
Attractions in Beaches of the Pacific Coast
Monterrico is one of the closest beaches to Guatemala City and can be reached in a few hours by bus or car. Its relaxed village, where pigs, chickens and other animals roam free, is down-to-earth and with its long wide sandy beach it is definitely worth a visit.
Puerto San Jose has a respectable beach with restaurants and bars nearby. However, there are better beaches to be found outside of Puerto San Jose at the small village of Chulamar.
In the town of Itztapa, there are opportunities to arrange a sport-fishing charter as the area is well-known for its large sailfish.
At Champerico, also known as Champe, small surf shops are becoming popular and there are some good restaurants, where you can sample the local seafood.
Close to the border of Mexico is Guatemala’s northernmost beach, Tilapa. The beach and small village is un-crowded and is a great place to get away from it all.
Sipicate is the best beach for surfing.
