Sitting by the Sangker River just west of Tonle Sap Battambang lies at the heart of Cambodia's rice bowl. Although the country's second largest town it still has a provincial atmosphere, largely unvisited by tourists heading off to Angkor Wat. This is a shame as there is much French colonial and traditional Cambodian architecture whilst outside town there are old pagodas and Angkorian-era ruins to discover.

Battambang’s history is somewhat different to that of the rest of Cambodia as many years were spent under Siamese rule. The city was founded in the 11th century and sits on the banks of the Sangker River. It was settled by Khmer people who took advantage of its fertile soils and it became known for its rice, fruit and vegetables – a reputation that continues today.

It fell to the Siamese in the 15th century and was either ruled by the Siamese or their Cambodian vassals right through until 1907 when under the French-Siamese treaty it was returned to Cambidia. The French moved in and the wooden stilt town as it was then expanded. The 20th century’s conflicts left Battambang relatively unscathed and today its pleasant tree-lined streets remain much as they were a century ago, with the art deco Psar Nat being the focal point of the town.
