Travel to Batinah Coast - Fabulous Forts and Coastline

If you want to relax on a beach after wandering around Arabian Nights-style forts then the Batinah Coast is a must. It stretches 320km northwest from Muscat to Khatmat and the UAE and is backed by the dramatic Western Hajar Mountains at the foot of which are some outstanding forts. Meanwhile the coast is historic with towns such as Sohar playing a prominent role in Oman’s history.

The Batinah coastal plain is approximately 25km wide and spreads out from the foot of the Western Hajar Mountains. Cultivated for many years it has a history stretching back 5000 years when its famous copper deposits were first mined. Possibly named for a descendant of Noah its strategic importance meant that Rustaq, inland and Sohar on the coast were both capitals.

Nowadays the copper mines have fallen silent, though only recently, and life continues much as it has done: off the main dual carriageway which allows for easy access to the region are small fishing villages or those involved in growing fruit such as mangos, pomegranates, apricots, plums and grapes.

Today people visit to explore Barka, Nakhl and Rustaq forts, dive, snorkel and watch birds on the Damaniyat Islands or simply relax by the Gulf of Oman at one of the many splendid hotels.

Attractions in Batinah Coast

The main forts of the area are Barka, Nakhl and Rustaq, and all have their individual appeal. Further attractions include the century-old fortress-like home of Bait Na’man, complete with authentic furnishings and the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve - great for watching birds whilst the snorkelling and diving is said to be some of the best in the country. Fanja is a wonderful ghost town, complete with crumbling mud walls whilst Sohar has its own fort.

Activities in Batinah Coast

A couple of days will allow you to explore the main sights of the area but you’ll need a further day if you want to include the Daymaniyat Islands too.

Snorkel over the reefs of the Damaniyat Islands enjoying stunning marine life or relax on the beach with a cold drink.

Getting Around

The best way is to base yourself in one of the comfortable hotels along the coast and explore from there on a series of guided excursions. Access to the forts by public transport is difficult, whilst the cost of a taxi would be prohibitive. By taking a driver-guide you’ll combine transportation with a historical perspective.
