Baranów Sandomierski is a perfectly preserved and sumptuous late-Renaissance magnate residence from the turn of the 16th century, set in a pleasant and well-kept park with flower terraces and fountains. It has four corner towers and a lovely courtyard with two-storeyed arcades that look very Italianesque with slender columns supporting graceful arches.
From the 16th century the town belonged to the Leszczyński family for a hundred years. This period was regarded as the "golden years" in Baranów’s history. The new owners erected a Renaissance castle, re-built a parish church and founded a famous Calvinist printing house. The town developed thanks to corn trade as well as craftsmanship. In the 17th century Baranów became an important centre of Polish reformation.
Attractions in Baranów Sandomierski
The castle in Baranów Sandomierski is one of the most valuable and most impressive examples of Renaissance architecture in Poland. It is famous for its beautiful cloistered, rectangular inner courtyard, its unique portals and the richly decorated attic on its front elevation. It was built for the Polish aristocrat Jedrzej Leszczynski, probably by the Italian royal court architect and sculptor, Santi Gucci.
The castle was destroyed twice by fire, and was also badly damaged during World War II. Although nothing remained of its interiors, the building itself survived. The reconstruction of Baranów Castle in the 1950's and 1960's returned the historic building to its former glory.
Relaxing
The castle area has a couple of restaurants and hotels and provides an ideal place to relax.
