Banlung is the capital of Ratanakiri Province in mountainous eastern Cambodia. Heavily forested and home to several minority groups it provides the perfect place from which to explore tribal villages, Yeak Laom Lake and Virachey National Park – home to endangered wildlife such as tiger and the clouded leopard.
Banlung is not a particularly attractive town and yet is drawing people who come to this remote northeastern corner of Cambodia to experience one of the last great undiscovered regions of South East Asia. As a base for getting into the surrounding countryside and meeting ethnic groups its unbeatable, and with great scenery all around a visit is a must for the intrepid traveller who loves to get off the beaten track.
Attractions in Banlung
Yeak Laom crater lake, waterfalls, Tampuen and other minority villages and Virachey National Park are all scattered around Banlung. The town itself has relatively little to offer in the way of sights, excepting its market which is colourful and a great place to meet some of the ethnic people of the region.
Activities in Banlung
The best thing to do is to make arrangements with a local trek supplier (see Responsible Travel, left) who will be able to arrange visits to local villages in the area, including to Yeak Laom crater lake.
Relaxing
With careful planning it is possible to get to hear traditional music and dance – see the Responsible Travel button at left.
Getting Around
The town is small enough to explore on foot. A moto can be hired for getting out and about but a 4ED will need to be hired for off the beaten track excursions; Banlung has suppliers. Bicycles too can be hired in town.
