Bako National Park was established in 1957 and is Sarawak's oldest national park. It covers only 27 sq. km. but it is probably the best place in Sarawak to experience the region’s amazing natural wonders. Known for its extraordinary natural scenery, rainforest, abundant and unusual wildlife, jungle streams, waterfalls, interesting plant life, secluded beaches and trekking trails, its most significant features are secluded coves and rugged rocky headlands with magnificent steep cliffs that overlook the South China sea.

The landscape of the park evolved millions of years ago due to erosion of the underlying sandstone and which created a coastline of steep cliffs, rocky headlands and stretches of white, sandy bays. Many of the rocky headlands have turned into fantastically shaped sea arches and sea stacks at the base of the headlands. As the park has been a protected area since 1957, the wildlife is somewhat less wary of humans and therefore travellers have perhaps a greater opportunity to see the regions remarkable creatures in their natural habitat.

Attractions in Bako National Park

The main attraction at Bako is its wildlife and the flora. It’s a captivating place for bird watching as over 150 species have been recorded here whilst Bako's nocturnal creatures include the flying lemur, pangolin, mouse deer, various bats, tarsier, slow loris and palm civet.

The park’s incredible variety of plant species and vegetation types comes from seven complete eco-systems: beach vegetation, cliff vegetation, kerangas or heath forest, mangrove forest, mixed dipterocarp forest, padang or grasslands vegetation and peat swamp forest.

Bako is also home to approximately 150 rare proboscis monkey, whilst the largest mammal found in the park is the Bornean bearded pig. It is unlike other wild pigs due to the prominent bristles either side of its snout.

Activities in Bako National Park

For those who enjoy trekking there is a well maintained network of 16 colour-coded walking trails throughout the park, which vary from easy forest strolls to full day jungle treks. Allow a couple of days to get to know the park and its inhabitants!

Relaxing

With many secluded beaches and coves there are ample opportunities to relax and take in the stunning scenery.

Getting Around

There is a regular bus service which operates from Kuching to Kampong Bako, once there you take a ride on a longboat for another 25-minute along the Bako River to the park.
