The town of Bagamoyo originates from the 18th century. It was once the capital of German East Africa and an important trading port. In the 19th century the port was used for both ivory and the slave trade. Several famous explorers, including Burton, Speke, Stanley and Grant started their expeditions from Bagamoyo.
Meaning 'lay down your heart', Bagamoyo is a relic of the slave trade as this was the exit port for many thousands of Tanzanians who left their hearts in their homeland.
In World War 1 in 1916 the British attacked Bagamoyo both by air and by sea, overrunning the Germans and taking their garrison. Nowadays it is the capital of the District of Bagamoyo and an important centre for the building of dhows.

Visit the old town and Kaole Ruins to glimpse the not so glorious past of the country. The Kaole Ruins lie 5 km south of the town. The ruins show the remains of two mosques and some tombs dating as far back as the 13th century.
