The village of Askas is situated southwest of Nicosia, at an altitude of about 900 metres above sea level. Its main features are the steep mountains crossed by the Askas river, besides deep valleys and various streams.
The village was named after Manolis Askas, a rich landowner in 1462. Its main attractions include the medieval church of St. John the Baptist (16th century), the church of the Holy Cross and the Ayia Paraskevi church that dates back to 1411.
The villagers' main occupation is viniculture and the cultivation of vegetables and pulses. Goats are bred mainly for the villagers' needs. Travellers can also taste "zivania", a locally distilled spirit.
