Officially reconized as a national reserve in 1994 and with its 120 000 hectares, Antisana Ecological Reserve is one of the most rigorously protected natural areas and home to one of the largest concentrations of Andean Condors left in Ecuador .

Antisana Reserve is situated some hundred kilometres northeast of the City of Quito and belongs to the provinces of Pichincha and Napo, at the limit of the Amazon basin. The spectacular landscape is enhanced by the marvelous Antisana Volcano, entirely included in the reserve and reaching an elevation of 5758 metres above sea level. The boundaries extend down to 300 metres elevation on the eastern slopes, where healthy populations of Spectacled Bears and Mountain Tapirs still exist.

Attractions in Antisana Ecological Reserve

The reserve includes flocks of animals and birds such us black-faced ibis, plumbeous sierra-finch, noble snipe, american golden-plover, curved-billed tinamou, american kestrel, the Ecuadorian Star Hummingbird, the majestic Condor of the Andes, tailed deer, mountain tapir, puma, spectacled bear, and Harris's hawk. Flora in the reserve includes yellow composites, gentians, red Indian paintbrush, orchids, and chuquiraguas. Some of the spectacular lagoons in the volcano include the Micacocha Lagoon, the Muerte Pungu Lagoon, and the Santa Lucia Lagoon.
