Offering the ability to reach the very heart of the Annapurna region and surrounding yourself in a bowl of icy peaks this 10-day trek is becoming justifiably popular. Reaching a maximum elevation of 4,130m the walk does not have the same degree of potentially serious issues related to altitude sickness (though note the altitude is still high and most definitely a factor) that the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp treks do, and yet the views are still incredible.

The walking starts in a place called Phedi, a popular place name for any settlement at the foot of a hill. From here you ascend through Brahman and Chhetri villages to Dhampus and Chomrong, a Gurung village at around 2000m. With any altitude problems starting to manifest themselves around now the route now leads to Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3,700m) and finally Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130m in the Sanctuary itself. Views are spectacular with the looming Ghandarba Chuli, Annapurna, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Annapurna III, Gangapurna and of course Machhapuchhare all visible.

This is a Strenuous-grade trip suitable for active hill walkers who ideally have some experience at walking at altitude. Saying that as with the Annapurna Circuit many fit first-time trekkers make the Sanctuary easily enough. The trekking season is October and November, March and April, with deep snow in the winter months.

Relaxing

Get up for dawn and watch the sunrise turn the peaks orange, then yellow and on to white.
