As a prime example of European town planning from the 16th century set in the middle of the Atlantic, Angra (the capital of Terceira island) fully deserves its world heritage status. Its pretty cobbled streets are packed with historical architecture with its myriad churches, palaces and museums and its stunning setting on a bay is beyond compare. Its lovely wrought iron balconies overhang the streets and the pretty outdoor cafés and in the summer it’s a riot of colour with festivals and processions.
This safe port attracted Terceira’s first settlers and it became the administrative centre in 1474. With the shipping increase of Spanish and French boats seeking a safe harbour in the Atlantic and later the increase of trade from the East, Angra grew quickly and flourished despite attacks from English privateers and the destructive earthquake of 1980.
