Amritsar is a major pilgrimage and tourism centre in Punjab and it is a very holy city. Undeniably the main attraction here is the Golden Temple which is the most important religious place to the Sikhs. You must cover your head and remove your shoes before entering but the complex is simply spectacular.
The name of the city derives from the name of the pool around the Golden Temple which is Harmandir Sahib and means "holy pool of nectar". It is the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. The Golden Temple was initiated by Guru Ramdaas Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru, and completed in 1601 by his successor Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
