Ahmedabad is the sixth largest city in India and it is located in the central region of the country. It is not known as a tourist destination, however, it has numerous attractions that are worth a visit. These include mosques, temples, gardens, museums and vibrant colourful festivals throughout the year.
Ahmedabad was once known as Karnavati but it was conquered in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah and was renamed as Ahmedabad.
Attractions in Ahmedabad
Attractions are plentiful in Ahmedabad and include Gandhi Aashram, Sidi Sayed Mosque, Bhadra Fort, Akshardham Temple, Amar dham, Hathisingh Jain Temple, Calico Textile Museum, Juma Masjid mosque and the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum.
Activities in Ahmedabad
Throughout the year you will find many exciting and vibrant festivals to attend. These include Makar Sankranti or festival of kites, RahskaBandhan, Holi, Navratri (festival of nine nights) and Eid-Ul-Fitr or Ramdhan Eid.
Relaxing
Relax at Kankaria Lake which is surrounded by parks and is home to an aquarium, a boat club, a natural history museum and a zoo. You can also shop for local traditional products or check out the huge variety of restaurants in the city.
Getting Around
There are numerous local buses but perhaps the best way to get around is by rickshaw.
