Probably the most popular town in Eastern Crete, ‘Ag Nik’, as it is affectionately known, lies around a palm-fringed – some say bottomless – lagoon.
A fashionable holiday destination for travellers, Agios Nikolaos offers sophistication and an excellent base for much of the eastern region of Crete.
Situated on the site of the ancient Hellenistic port of Lato, Agios Nikolaos (Ag Nik) is now the regional capital for Lassithi. It lies on one of the most beautiful bays in Crete – the Bay of Mirabello and comes to life every evening when the bars and restaurants prove its popularity.
The area around Agios Nikolaos has lots to see. The small coastal resort of Elounda, made famous following the television series ‘Who Pays The Fisherman’, lies almost opposite the island of Spinalonga, a Venetian, then Turkish fortress which became a leper colony. Buildings are being restored with its rise in popularity following Victoria Hyslop’s book ‘The Island’. Inland is the Lassithi Plateau, a large area surrounded by mountains and a place worth staying for a few days. Here you can find remains of a hilltop Minoan city as well as the cave where, legend has it, the baby Zeus lived.

During the day numerous boat trips are on offer, but Agios Nikolaos is also an important port with boats leaving regularly to other Greek islands.
