Agios Athanasios lies 3 kilometres northeast of Limassol. This traditional village took its name from the saint of the community. Before the Turkish invasion of 1974, Agios Athanasios was a small agricultural community with approximately 400 residents. After the invasion, it accommodated a large number of displaced persons; two large refugee settlements were built in the area. The village growth continued rapidly in all aspects becoming a small modern town.
2 kilometres from the village, you can find the monastery of Panayias tis sfalangiotisas built on a hill and from where you can have a wonderful view on the town with the sea in the horizon. At Approximately equal distance from the village, you can find the pisturesque little church of Ayia Marina.
